Framing Repair
We have been able to repair most of the frames that have been brought to us. Once in a great while the cost for repair will be "greater than the sum of the parts" and we will do our best to dissuade you.
In even rarer instances a very valuable hand-carved gold-leafed frame comes in. These rarities are referred to Conservators so you will be all set if you ever run into those excitable Keno brothers...
It should also go without saying that we replace broken and missing glass in your frames. Just bring it in and we will have it ready for you before you can say "is my framing finished yeat"
Love the art - hate the frame? Love the frame - hate the mat? We can always retrofit your existing pieces with whatever it takes to make you love them again.
If your matting is over ten years old chances are it's time at least for new matting and backing. Acid free materials have only been widely available quite recently - even the dustcovers I use are now acid-free!
Retrofitting F.A.Q.
What is retrofitting?
Retrofitting refers to the refurbishing of your original framing. You already have the perfect frame. You love the picture that is in this frame. But the whole thing seems dated somehow, not to mention dusty.
It is only in last 2 decades or so that archival materials have become widely available to the framing community. Sometimes all it takes is a brand new 100% rag mat plus an acid free backing, a new dustcover and a thorough cleaning to give your old favorite a face-lift. A new piece of UV filtering glass couldn't hurt either!
How can I determine if my old frame is in need of retrofitting?
A Look at the inner edge of your matting. What color do you see? If it is dark brown or rust colored - bring it in! The brown you see is probably the discoloration from the acid in an old wood-pulp mat.
Look at the back of the frame. Is the paper brown? Is the paper torn or missing entirely? If you see brown corrugated cardboard, or worse yet, a wooden shingle-back - bring it in!
Archival backing materials are a light gray in color, or pure white. Anything else presents a "clear and present danger" to your frame package.
